Uzumaki Tray

by Tomoaki Nakano

This lacquer tray by Japanese woodworker Tomoaki Nakano is a beautiful vessel.

First it's hand turned on a lathe before being sanded and polished. The next stage is the application of lacquer that is applied to the exterior of the vessel. Tomoaki focuses on applying thin layers leading up to a final thick layer to give a beautiful smooth finish.

The black exterior contrasting with small lines running around the piece pops out at you, possibly helped by the functional shape of the tray. Certainly one of a kind.
