Toned Black Lacquer Chopsticks

These lacquer chopsticks finished in a black lacquer have been handmade by Japanese woodworker Tomoaki Nakano at his studio in Sakae, Fukui Prefecture.

First this chopsticks are cut and then slowly carved by hand before being sanded and polished. The next stage is the application of lacquer that is applied to the exterior of the wood. Tomoaki focuses on applying thin layers leading up to a final thick layer to give a beautiful smooth finish. These chopsticks have an two extra types of black lacquer added to protect and add something to the design.

This lacquer makes the wood water resistant and also has anti-bacterial properties.
