Raku Ellipse Container
An oval ceramic container made by British artist Kate Schuricht in her UK studio. This decorative piece has been raku fired in a gas kiln and smoked in sawdust, leaving a distinctive charred and finely crackled surface. The lid handle is handmade with beads and threaded with linen twine. The interior blue/green glaze is a striking contrast to the calm exterior and adds an element of surprise.
Raku originated from ancient Japanese firings where glazed pieces are rapidly fired and removed from the kiln when the glaze is molten (1000 C). The hot pieces are then put straight into sawdust for smoking. The raku process is dramatic and unpredictable and it ensures that no two pieces are ever the same.
Please note: Each vessel is made by hand and may feature differences in the glaze and clay body. This container is not watertight or foodsafe. Please display away from direct sunlight. Wipe clean with a damp, lint free cloth.
Approx Dimensions: 12cm Length x 8cm Width x 11cm Height. Material: Ceramic (Raku). Handmade in the UK. An original design by Kate Schuricht ©
