Makiji Lacquer Bowl

by Yusuke Tazawa

Wooden bowl handcrafted by Japanese craftsman Yusuke Tazawa. This piece is very unique as the lacquer used to coat the bowl is a combination of urushi and charcoal powder (using the makiji technique). Layering in this way creates a rougher surface texture, the colour has hints of brown and orange.

This combination is really quite beautiful, as the light hits you see all the little bumps and flecks from the lacquer. It's almost unbelievable that this bowl is made of wood.
