Cherry Oval Plate

by Tomoharu Funahashi

A cherry wooden oval plate made by Japanese woodworker Tomoharu Funahashi. This dish is very refined but has a rustic charm thanks to the method used to craft the piece.

First the form is cut from a piece of wood, he then shapes the plate and later adds marks using his chisel to create a ripple pattern across the surface. The underside has light chisel markings so it can lay flat on the table, but around the edges and top they are slightly deeper. Not only is this beautiful on the eye, it also helps create friction on the surface for sweets and small snacks.
