This lacquer spoon in a brown colour has been handmade by Japanese woodworker Tomoaki Nakano at his studio in Sakae, Fukui Prefecture.
First this spoon is cut and then slowly carved by hand before being sanded and polished. The next stage is the application of lacquer that is applied to the exterior of the spoon. Tomoaki focuses on applying thin layers leading up to a final thick layer to give a beautiful smooth finish. This lacquer makes the wood water resistant and also has anti-bacterial properties.
