Toru Sugimura

Toru Sugimura makes tableware, accessories and furniture at his studio called Knot Wood Works. Born in Nishinomiya in Hyogo prefecture, he later studied woodworking in Nagano and started his own studio in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, later moving to Ryugasaki, Ibaraki Prefecture where he now makes his works.

His goal is to showcase the beauty in the wood that he uses, and to compliment this with the unique shapes that he’s able to carve with his chisel. Often he begins with a blank form in which he carves out by hand and then designs the form and shape of the piece as he works. Every object is truly one of a kind.

Although his aesthetic is rooted in rusticity, with a rule of his being not to take too much wood away from the vessel itself, the smooth simplicity of the surface is something to behold. As he crafts he usually makes subtle surface markings to catch the light and make unique functional sculptures that can stand the test of time.
