Woodwork
Mutsumi Goto
At the majestic foothills of Mount Asama, an active volcano in central Honshū, here works Japanese woodworker and lacquer craftsman Mutsumi Goto. His workshop in Miyota, a small town in Nagano Prefecture, is situated in an original Iron Works. Here he channels many of the same thoughts that the original metalworkers would of had, using it as a space to create natural looking vessels from a mixture of wood found in the local area.
Goto creates objects that can be used as functional instruments for daily life. As well as this, he carries down many of the traditional techniques that have been passed on to him. The colours and shapes are also simple, rather than intruding or overpowering.
