Lipped Lacquer Vessel

by Maiko Okuno

This lacquer katakuchi (lipped bowl) by Japanese woodworker Maiko Okuno really is a vessel of beauty.

Made of chestnut, the bowl has been hand turned on a lathe before being precisely cut to shape with hand tools. Once finished and dried it is then treated with a lacquer solution to protect the wood.

The red exterior pops out at you, possibly helped by black coloured interior, and the stark lip makes the form striking in appearance. Certainly one of a kind.
