Red Nested Urushi Bowls

by Fujii Works

These bowls have been hand turned on the lathe by master craftsman Kenichi Fujii before his wife and fellow artisan Minako applies the lacquer solution in thin layers.

Urushi refers to a native tree that grows in Japan and a handful of other countries in the Far East that produces a remarkable sap that can be applied to woodwork to create a hard protective layer on the vessel that also has antibacterial properties.

These particular bowls have a smooth lacquer finish and each vessel fits one inside each other. A unique set that's crafted expertly by hand in Japan.
