Athlete Sculpture

by Carl Auböck

A sculptural addition to the shop is this delightful athlete creation that was originally designed by Carl Aubock in Vienna, Austria. His brass sculptures are still produced today in honour of his timeless design, having passed in late 1957.

The athlete sculpture was made thanks to Carl Auböck’s wife, Mara Uckunowa (sculptor + textile designer). The story is she befriended Josef Albers in Munich, followed him to the Bauhaus in Weimar where she met Carl Auböck II, him a student and her an assistant teacher. In 1923 they married in Vienna, with Mara being the ‘working out’ type, this inspired Carl to make an athletic form.
