This wooden dish/plate has been hand cut by master craftsman Akihiko Sugita, he then applies lacquer to the piece in various layers to protect the surface of the wood.

Urushi refers to a native tree that grows in Japan and a handful of other Far Eastern countries. The tree generates a remarkable sap that can be used to create a hard protective layer on wooden vessels, it also has some antibacterial properties.

This particular bowl has a fantastic matte black finish, underneath you can see all the wood markings which look like a piece of slate. It's a real work of art.
